Raw Food Diet, WWE Raw.... Ric Flair, Triple-H, Hacksaw Dugan. Uncooked food... Okay, okay. They have nothing in common. Here's a true story; the raw food diet is getting some serious attention. I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and three unrelated people told me they just started this diet. I've read about it magazines, seen it on TV, and of course it's all over the net. I must admit it does sound pretty interesting. I consider myself to have good nutrition. My diet is fairly healthy. Most of the foods I consume are organic or natural. I try to stay away from preservatives and never microwave foods. I will tell you later why never to microwave foods. That's a whole different story in and of itself. But the idea of never eating cooked food again? Well, I haven't grabbed on to it. Yet...
It's said that the raw food diet is inherently good for your body. The human body has been proven to digest raw foods much easier than the processed foods. In fact, there are many health benefits from consuming a diet of raw foods. You may be wondering what raw foods are; they are uncooked, unprocessed, mostly organic foods including fruits, nuts, berries, vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy. Basically, they are everything we eat already, just not cooked. Not ever cooked. Not at all. Cooking is bad. When food is cooked, it loses all of its enzymes. This is a problem because we need enzymes for every function in our body. Cooking makes it harder for our bodies to break up and digest the foods that we eat. This food then begins to get stored in our bodies as toxins; which can lead to all kinds of diseases and illness. That's why they (raw foodists) say cooking food is bad. But, it seems to me like there would be some sort of health risk for eating uncooked food. As it turns out there is. Salmonella bacteria is one. There are also claims of other diseases, including depression, related to a diet of strictly raw foods. But, for believers, the health benefits outweigh the risks.
One of the people I met who is on the diet claimed he had lost twenty pounds since beginning the raw diet. He said he felt better than ever. He'd been doing it for a month. His daily eating regimen consisted of a raw food bar for breakfast, one for lunch, and then a sensible dinner of raw fruits, vegetables, and meat. Sounds delightful... So much for that burger and fries at your favorite sports bar. No more Perkins breakfast Sunday morning. I don't know how someone can adhere to this diet religiously and never eat cooked foods. In my humble opinion, life is a game of balance. I would assume that most people who try this diet eventually go back to eating some sort of cooked or processed food. Those who stay with it permanently either have extremely good discipline or they physically feel so much better that it's easy. Either way, I know I am not one of those people. Not at this point in my life. I'm not ready to commit to eating 100% raw.
After researching the raw food diet, I may try to integrate some parts of it into my life. It's not good to be one dimensional, right? I think I'll ease into it. Who knows, maybe I'll be full blown Raw by this time next year. No more cooked food. Hmmm. As long as I'm changing, maybe I should stop watching WWE Raw, and start watching Discovery channel and National Geographic. I don't know if that's a good idea. I'm sure the Nature Boy (Ric Flair) wouldn't be WOOOOOOOO'ing if I abandoned him and his buddies because of the raw food diet. He'd be pissed.
