Anxiety, worry and angst are a state that people in today’s world experience on daily basis. This fearful state is a bodily symptom caused when a persistent negative thought pattern is being maintained. On average we think about 1 thought per 1.2 seconds. However, the thoughts we pay attention to will become more prominent and will eventually form a habit or a pattern of thinking. In other words, the more we focus on a particular train of thought, the more repetitive it becomes as a bodily experience.
When you are being present (in the now) you can observe how each thought is directly connected to the body and has a bodily sensation associated with it (either pleasant or unpleasant). It is impossible to have a thought without a sensation. Negative thoughts will create unpleasant sensations while positive thoughts will produce pleasant sensations.
Anxiety is often linked to a traumatic event, either physical injury or emotional. An experience of anxiety happened a couple of years ago, I had suffered a severe concussion while snowboarding. When I woke up, I had no recollection of where I was. I also didn’t remember I was in a relationship nor that I had a baby. I got scarred. I thought “How can I take care of my baby if I can barely take care of myself?” And that was my first experience of a panic attack.
This fearful thought pattern repeated a few more times over the following 2 years of recovery. That underlying thought of not being able to take care of my baby, was just so real and scary. But scary as it was, the thought was not true. As I stayed focused on what was right in front of me (be in the now) and consciously create new habit of thinking in which I was 100% recovered, I stopped entering the thought pattern of fear and imagination. It wasn’t long before I was able to completely replace those self-destructive thought patterns. Today, those thoughts are nowhere to be found in my thinking.
Now, I would like to share some of the most effective homeopathic remedies that can quickly calm the mind during anxiety or panic attacks. Once peace of mind is established one can consciously create a new habit of thinking by focusing on the positive side of the outcome. The more one focuses on the new thought the stronger the connection between two neurons and the more solid the neural pathway becomes.
Homeopathy is based on the Law of Similars, Like Cures Like. The concept of resonance helps us understand how homeopathy works. Resonance is defined in physics as the interaction of two bodies vibrating at about the same speed. Disease conditions are characterized by a particular frequency. A homeopathic remedy for a given disease has the same frequency, resonates with the disease, and thus neutralizes it. The two identical frequencies cancel each other out.
Arnica Montana (Leopard’s Bane) – is extremely helpful if anxiety is a result of physical injury, i.e. concussion or mental strain i.e. excessive studying. Person needing this remedy prefers to be left alone; s/he fears touch or the approach of anyone; s/he is better still. S/he is in shock, nervous, cannot bear pain. Whole body is oversensitive and sore.
Aconitum Napellus (Monkshood) – this remedy is great for panic attacks that are sudden and violent. A person needing this remedy is in severe state of fear and anguish. This frightful state causes the person to be restless (tossing bout). There is an increased imagination with regards to the negative outcome.
Calcarea Carbonica (Carbonate of Lime) – is effective for people who are apprehensive in general with a characteristic fear of losing control, becoming insane and fear of misfortune. S/he is low spirited, in jaded state. Anxiety with palpitation, coldness and perspiration.
Cannabis Indica (Hashish) – inhibits the higher faculties and stimulates the imagination; all sensations and emotions are exaggerated to the utmost degree. This remedy is very effective in anxious depression, especially where the person experiences the constant fear of becoming insane. Couple other characteristics of cannabis: restlessness, uncontrollable laughter, forgetful, vertigo as of floating of.
If you would like individual treatment to address the cause of your anxiety with a mind to eliminating it entirely, I would be happy to work with you.
Other effective methods to calm the mind are:
1. Adopt the upright posture
Imagine you just won a big prize, what posture would you be? Stay in this posture as much as you can during the day, this will improve the chemistry in your brain.
2. Get a Massage or hug someone
When being touched our brain releases a neuropeptide called Oxytocin, which basically promotes feelings of trust and bonding. It also slows down the heart beat and lowers blood pressure. It is a great method to quickly relax, trust and allow healing.
3. Laugh as much as you can
Laughing, when we feel anxious, is not impossible. If need be, force a smile on your face and keep it for a few minutes. This change in your body sends signals to the brain to no longer feel threatened and the brain will start releasing endorphins that bring back that good feeling sensation. Find something to start laughing about. Let your laughter do its healing.
4. When you feel anxious go for 1 hour walk and look far into the distance, preferably in nature
The change in your body posture signals the brain there’s no longer any need to feel scarred or under attack (activated sympathetic system). Look far into the distance to give a more expansive perspective and the body will immediately start to release endorphins. Nature will do the healing on its own, sacred geometry occurring in its purest form. Trees emit negative ions (computers give off positive ions) and when being hugged by us they ground and balance the positive ions we tend to be saturated with.
5. Visualization Method
Incorporate a 30 minute visualization technique into your daily routine. During this time, imagine how you would be and act if you didn’t have anxiety. How would your life be different? What would you do? Would you try new activity? Would you be more social? This reinventing method is extremely effective and if you are interested in learning more about this technique, I encourage you to read a book “The New Psycho-Cybernetics” by dr. M. Maltz.
6. Anti anxiety Foods:
– Green tea contains the anxiety-reducing amino acid L-theanine
– Eat complex carbohydrates to increase glutamic acid/glutamate which forms glutamine, an amino involved in the production of GABA (an inhibitory chemical responsible for creating the calming, rhythmic electrical impulses in the brain). Cooking destroys amino acids so eat as many raw
foods as possible.
I recommend looking into Vipassana Meditation. This specific type of meditation helps to get to the cause of what is causing the problem. Once the cause is eradicated the symptoms (anxiety) will disappear.
