Just how toxic is vegetable oil?
By Matt Hall — Staff Writer
One of the biggest lies currently being told to consumers is that vegetable oils are healthy. Canola oil is a great example of this. Once trans fat was made a media scapegoat a few years ago, many consumers assumed other oils were actually good for them.
Unfortunately, the truth is many vegetable oils can seriously harm your health. Studies are showing how the composition fatty acids in these oils are harmul. Humans have never encountered anything like the oils we’re now being fed regularly, and it’s causing us to miss out on some genuine nutritional value.
Here are just a few reasons why you should stay away from vegetable oils.
In Nature, Vegetable Oil Never Comes in the Amounts We Consume Them Today
It’s true that oils from vegetables occur naturally and exist in many of the healthy foods we eat. The problem is when we get these oils in excessively high quantities. For example, omega-6 fatty acids are common in foods like almonds, olive oil, and even bacon. However, the quantity of omega-6 in vegetable oils actually disrupts your body’s chemistry. Our consumption of vegetable oils has increased thousands of times in the last 100 years, and now approximately 7% of the calories consumed in the U.S. come from these oils.
That doesn’t sound very balanced, natural or healthy.
As it Turns Out, Vegetable Oil is LOADED with Trans Fats
Many consumers unwittingly think that vegetable oils are healthier for them because they have less trans fat than other oils. This is completely wrong. In fact, vegetable oils often contain HUGE amounts of trans fats — sometimes vegetable oil is as much as 4.2% trans fat! You need to do more than avoid fast food to stay away from toxic trans fat — you need to avoid vegetable oil, too.
Vegetable Oil Increases Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
The leading cause of death in the world, the food you eat greatly affects your risk for cardiovascular disease. While there are some foods you can eat to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, avoiding vegetable oil is one of the top things you can do to protect yourself. Evidence from multiple studies indicates the danger vegetable oils pose with regards to cardiovascular health.
Vegetable Oils Mess Up the Balance of Your Body’s Fatty Acids
Of the different fatty acids your body uses, there are two it can’t produce itself and must be gathered from food: omega-3 and omega-6. Even though both acids are essential, your ratios between them must be correct or you run the risk of health problems. It used to be the ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 was around 4:1 or 1:2. Now, some people have a ratio as high as 16:1, and that’s due to the high amounts of vegetable oil in our food. This actually CHANGES our cell membranes and fat stores on a structural level!
Inflammation Results from Eating Vegetable Oil
Inflammation — and complications from inflammation including arthritis, depression, cardiovascular disease and even cancer — can make life pretty miserable.
Like many of the other problems associated with vegetable oil, the increased chronic inflammation is the direct result of a greater presence of omega-6 in the body.
Eat These Oils Instead
for the reason above (and several more), vegetable oil should be removed from your diet. It’s dangerous, wrecks your body’s natural composition, and that’s not even considering the effects of GMO vegetable oil (some of which are still to be seen).
Instead of eating vegetable oil, use olive oil or coconut oil instead. Both have numerous health benefits, and coconut oil can actually promote brain health. Remove vegetable oil from your diet today and live healthier.
